Johnny Hartman he/him (Oakland, CA)
Well, hello there! My name is Johnny. I grew up most of my life in Reno, Nevada. With that being said, Nevada is a state whose economy is extremely volatile. Therefore, during economic crises (like the Great Recession of the mid-2000s or the economic impact of COVID-19), the entire state practically becomes shut down. Because of this, I have witnessed the large highs and lows in construction, which lead to a repeating cycle of development, abandonment, demolition, and re-development. However, this is seemingly a popular American mindset. Through my travels in Europe, I have seen the importance of restoration, reuse, and conservation. Every building has a rich history, even if not well known to society at large. My hometown is growing and losing touch with its history; my thesis proposes to adaptively reuse a local landmark and create a case study for other cities. Lastly, following graduation, I plan to move to the Bay Area to continue my focus on creating meaningful, community-based design.
