Lemp Innovation Center (St. Louis, MO)

As our structures age and their intended services become obsolete, it is important that the existing urban infrastructure can be adapted for new uses. By moving towards a design process that promotes reuse and flexibility, buildings are able to extend their service life and can continually transform into a variety of functions in order to sustainably meet the needs of a growing and constantly changing city.

Located in the Marine Villa neighborhood of St Louis, Missouri, the historic Lemp Brewery was built in various stages from 1865 to 1950. Since 1980, the 27 existing buildings found on the 13.7 acre site have sat underutilized after transitioning from a brewery to a shoe factory. This project aims to repurpose the existing buildings of the brewery complex to create a community asset and support the growth of technology-driven research and entrepreneurship. The Lemp Innovation Center re-uses three buildings to establish a catalytic setting for research and innovation, while avoiding the detrimental economic and environmental effects from the demolition and new construction cycle. The project features bridge-like connections that span between buildings, linking labs and workspaces and providing circulation for both users and industrial innovation products. The flexible and adaptable working environments allow for constant programmatic change and enable multiple workgroups of different sizes to collaborate effortlessly.
